Nottingham University Hospitals announce new Director of Corporate Governance and new Chief Financial Officer

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) is pleased to announce two new appointments that further strengthen the executive team and Trust Board.

Gilbert George will take up post as Director of Corporate Governance from 1 February and Paul Matthew will take up post as Chief Financial Officer from 1 May.

Gilbert joins the Trust from Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and brings over 15 years' public sector experience as an Executive Director and Board Member. Alongside his Trust work, he chairs meetings of the NHS National Governance Network (which includes Executive Governance leads and Trust Secretaries) and is a specialist advisor on the National Race Equality Code. In 2020, Gilbert was shortlisted for the UK Governance Professional of the Year across public, private and the third sector.

In addition to the NHS, Gilbert has held positions as Director of Corporate Services for various Government bodies, and was the Finance Director for the International Institute of Energy Conservation, funded by the US Government Environmental Agency.

Paul joins NUH from United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust (ULHT), where he has been Director of Digital and Finance since 2019 and played a major part in the improvement of the Trust’s finances, and its recent removal from the national Recovery Support Programme.

He has 20 years' experience in the NHS across finance departments, and has further experience acting as caretaker of the Director of People and OD role for a year while at ULHT, and currently also has oversight of its Estates and Facilities functions. Paul is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants.

Gilbert George, incoming Director of Corporate Governance, said: “The people and taxpayers of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire deserve the very best healthcare services, and I’m looking forward to working with the team to provide excellence in our corporate governance structure.

“Governance is not just compliance, but a critical tool to helping the Trust achieve its objectives, and to that end I am committed to building on the Trust’s ongoing work to bring about a positive cultural change in the way NUH operates.

“My work has always been deeply values-driven, and I believe the experience I’ve gained at the top level across the public and private sectors, and in particular as an advisor on the National Race Equality Code, has provided me with the expertise to make NUH a place that is truly inclusive.

“I also hope that my lived experience as a BAME person at the top level of corporate governance, and the visibility of my appointment in an executive role, will prove a positive catalyst for change across the Trust and wider NHS systems.”

Paul Matthew, incoming Chief Financial Officer, said: “I am pleased to be joining NUH as it continues to improve its operations. The challenges at the Trust are well-documented, but so are the opportunities to provide a truly top-class service for the people of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

“In my roles at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust and other NHS organisations over the past 20 years, I’ve been able to produce meaningful improvements to their finances and other operations, and I greatly look forward to working with Anthony May and the team at NUH to effect positive change here too.”

Anthony May, Chief Executive at NUH, said: “We’re delighted to have Gilbert and Paul join the team at NUH. Their appointment marks another positive step in strengthening the organisation’s leadership, and their respective experience and skillsets position them as ideal candidates to help tackle the challenges the Trust faces.

“All of us at NUH look forward to working closely with Gilbert and Paul on implementing improvements across the Trust’s corporate governance and financial operations.”
