Head of Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement

Kate is responsible for the overall approach to Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement for Research and Innovation, also for our two centres of excellence; Nottingham Clinical Research Facility and Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre. She and her team advise researchers on how to meaningfully involve people in research, ensuring our research is designed with and for the patients we serve.

Patient & Public Involvement Manager

Liz joined the Research & Innovation team as PPI Manager in April 2021 and leads the Research Volunteer programme at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. She has a background in marketing and is a qualified paramedic.

She has considerable experience as a volunteer herself, including offering her skills to the British Red Cross, serving as branch chair for the NCT - the UK’s leading charity for parents - and as a school governor.

More recently, Liz worked at the QMC and City Hospital in the undergraduate medical education department.

PPI/PPE Facilitator

Andy joined the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (GI & Liver Theme) in the summer of 2012 as a Patient and Public Involvement/Engagement (PPI/E) Facilitator.  He has managed the NIHR Nottingham Digestive Diseases BRC’s Patient Advisory Group (PAG) for almost a decade and its membership has doubled in that time. Andy has facilitated the PAG’s PPI contributions to 168 clinical trials over that period, and has led/collaborated the PAG’s work to a further 221 PPE related-events. Andy has worked in the public sector in Nottinghamshire for over 30 years, and has specialised in ‘community focused’ initiatives on a wide range of social issues i.e. crime reduction; community safety (including twelve months working for the European Forum for Urban Security); drug & alcohol misuse (as part of the county-wide Primary Care Trust); and now inpatient & public involvement in clinical research.

Anthony studied multimedia technology at the University of Lincoln before starting his career in healthcare. He has over 10 years of experience in healthcare, working for a number of private providers across the City in varying roles before joining the NHS in 2018.

Anthony has a strong background in patient experience and engagement and joined the Research & Innovation team as PPI Manager in May 2022. As well as being involved in several studies, he oversees the Participation in Research Experience Survey (PRES).

PPIE Facilitator

Sian started her career in academia, researching Neuroscience, and was awarded her PhD in 2018. She joined the NHS to work in communications and engagement in research that year and has since gained extensive experience in patient and public involvement.

Sian joined the Research and Innovation PPIE team in 2023. She focuses primarily on the involvement and engagement of children and young people, as well as equality, diversity, and inclusion across PPIE.
