Latest Care Quality Commission maternity survey scores areas of NUH as significantly improving since 2022.
Patients have scored Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) as having significantly improved in Labour in Birth services in the latest Care Quality Commission (CQC) survey.
The CQC has published the results of the National Maternity Survey for 2023 in which NUH showed marked improvements in Labour and Birth and scored significantly better in three questions compared to the survey carried out in 2022.
The results that were improved upon showed that antenatal concerns were taken seriously and that women and birthing people felt they were given enough information about the benefits of induction. The results also praised our maternity services for giving information and advice regarding the risks of induced labour.
The aim of the survey is to find out what people think about their experiences of antenatal care, childbirth and postnatal care. It is part of CQC’s national patient survey programme to improve experiences of maternity care.
A total of 362 people who received care in the maternity services at NUH responded to the survey which was carried out between January and February 2023 with a ‘booster sample’ focused on capturing the views of women and birthing people from ethnic minority backgrounds being carried out in March 2023.
The survey showed that for 48 of the questions, the results were about the same as other Trusts, for three of the questions the Trust was better than other trusts, for one question NUH was somewhat better than other trusts and for two questions the Trust was somewhat worse.
The Trust also scored somewhat better for care after birth, where respondents fed back that their birth partner was able to stay with them as long as they wanted in hospital after birth.
However, the results identified that women and birthing people would like to see improvements in care at home after birth.
The results of the latest national maternity survey come as further evidence of improving maternity services in Nottingham’s hospitals following the results of the latest CQC inspection report published in September 2023, which improved the rating for maternity services at both Nottingham City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre to Requires Improvement.
Michelle Rhodes, Chief Nurse at NUH said: “Our teams continue to work together to make improvements to our services and these results and feedback are important in helping us to shape our maternity services going forward. It is really pleasing to see that we have scored significantly better for antenatal care and that our women and birthing people feel listened to. We know there is more to do and we will analyse the findings and continue to work on improvements across our maternity services.”
