Sponsorship for clinical research

A sponsor is an organisation that accepts responsibility for ensuring that there are proper arrangements to manage and finance a research study.

The sponsor takes primary responsibility that the design of the study meets appropriate standards and that arrangements are in place to ensure correct conduct and reporting.

Sponsorship by NUH

All research taking place in the NHS (that is where the research involves NHS patients, data or tissue) must have sponsor.

For clinical research, this will normally be NUH. But it may also be a commercial company or one of our universities.

The Research and Innovation Team needs proof of an approved sponsor for all research taking place within NUH.

Pause in new sponsorship

Please note that from 15 April 2025, NUH will not be accepting any new requests for sponsorship for a period of six months.
