Global Health South Asia

Global Health South Asia

Global Health South Asia was established on 15 December 2023 to provide a supportive professional network for the South Asian diaspora at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). The Hub supports NUH’s inclusion strategy by creating a platform where colleagues with connections to South Asia can connect, share knowledge, and engage in meaningful conversations around global health, culture, and community.

Through this network, we aim to strengthen community engagement, foster cultural intelligence within the organisation, and enhance the international reputation of NUH by building strong global partnerships and collaborations.

Our Activities

Since its launch, the Hub has organised several events designed to promote cultural awareness, community engagement, and staff wellbeing.

South Asian Heritage Month Walking Challenge (July 2024)

To celebrate South Asian Heritage Month 2024, the Hub organised a walking challenge from Queen’s Medical Centre to City Hospital. The event aimed to raise awareness of the Hub while also supporting the professional and personal development of colleagues from the South Asian diaspora.

Participants collectively raised £565, which was generously donated to Nottingham Hospitals Charity to support future initiatives and community projects.

International Staff Month Culinary Celebration (November 2024)

During International Staff Month, the Hub hosted a vibrant culinary celebration that brought colleagues together through the shared experience of food. Staff enjoyed a culinary journey through the flavours of the Indian subcontinent, highlighting the diversity of cultures represented within NUH.

The event was generously supported by the Race, Ethnicity & Cultural Heritage (REACH) Network and served as a reminder of the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity and appreciation across the organisation.

The event was a vibrant celebration of South Asian culture, identity, and community. It was opened with supportive words from our CEO, Anthony May, Executive sponsor of the REACH Network, Andy Callow and key allies across the Trust demonstrated leadership’s commitment to cultural inclusion.

Throughout the day, colleagues shared their personal “Roots to Routes” stories. They were also treated to Chenda Melam drumming, Bollywood dance performances and a symbolic candle-lighting ceremony which offered a moment of reflection.

Diwali Celebration at QMC (November 2025)

Diwali celebration at NUH brought together staff, partners, and members of the community for an event that highlighted the festival’s message of light, renewal, and shared humanity.

The event also showcased the hospital’s commitment to improving health outcomes globally. Colleagues highlighted the organisation’s international partnerships, including its collaborative work with hospitals across South Asia. Through training, shared expertise, and joint initiatives, this partnership strengthens cancer care and clinical capacity beyond the UK, contributing to improved outcomes for patients internationally.

The Diwali gathering served as a moment to celebrate culture and highlight the hospital’s wide-reaching impact—both locally and across global healthcare communities.
