We are fortunate to have two schemes within the Government’s New Hospital Programme (a national commitment to more than 40 hospital building projects, backed by an initial £3.7bn investment). These are the National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) and Tomorrow’s NUH.

We are also investing in the future of our hospitals through a number of other programmes, including the Maternity and Neonatal Redesign Programme.

Reconfiguration Programme

The Reconfiguration Programme is a group of large, multi-million-pound construction and development projects taking place across Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH). Each of these projects is vital to transform the treatment our patients receive and the working environments of our staff. These projects are mostly externally funded through grants and often relocate services within our hospital sites. They aim to provide updated facilities, support greater efficiency, and improve flow through our hospitals.

In addition, each of these projects is aligned and interconnected with the longer-term shared vision for a future NUH, which includes reimagining and redeveloping the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital sites to benefit our patients, staff and communities.

Maternity and Neonatal Redesign Programme

On 10 December 2024 we were thrilled to open our brand new £32million neonatal unit at the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) in Nottingham.  We are now the largest in the East Midlands in terms of cots and footprint.

The new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) is four times the size of the previous one, has been designed to be a home-from-home for babies and their families, and it is hoped that it will help to set a standard for neonatal units across the UK.

Funded by NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care and Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Integrated Care Board, the neonatal unit provides an additional 21 cots at QMC, taking the total to 38, and the overall footprint of the site has increased from 500m² to 2000m².  Find out more about the Maternity and Neonatal Redesign Programme.

Tomorrow’s NUH

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to re-imagine our main hospital sites, looking at how and where we deliver services so that they are more joined up and accessible.

Through Tomorrow’s NUH, we will be better placed to respond to changing healthcare needs and take advantage of innovations in medicine and technology. Tomorrow’s NUH will put our hospitals at the forefront of healthcare research and innovation, and make our buildings both more efficient and greener.  Find out more about Tomorrow’s NUH.
