Recruitment and career development

Deciding the right place to start or to develop your career in nursing and midwifery is a really important choice. At Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), there are so many opportunities to find the right career for you. We're a busy, acute Trust, with a huge breadth of clinical areas, offering the opportunity for our nurses and midwives to develop new skills, work in different teams and environments, and meet a variety of patients.

Registered Nurse and ODP recruitment events

We host four corporate recruitment events each year, these events are for registered nurses and operating department practitioners (ODPs) and include divisions from across the Trust. The events include an opportunity to meet the senior nursing team and the practice education team on the day. The recruitment of midwives and nurses in the Children's Hospital is led by their respective teams.

Below is a list of divisions and departments that join the recruitment events:

  • Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Cancer and associated specialties
  • Critical care
  • Theatres
  • Neonates
  • Ambulatory care

All applicants who are shortlisted for interview will be allocated to a panel dependent upon their preferences on the application form - getting the allocation right for successful candidates is essential.

Rotation opportunities

If you're a newly-qualified, or a current Staff Nurse at Team NUH, you could take part in our Rotation Programme to develop your experience and take the next step in your career. 

It's flexible in its length with some nurses opting for an eighteen month or two year rotation split into six month placements. However, some nurses opt for two nine month placements if they go to specialist areas.

Nurses can choose to do rotations that follow a traditional pathway such as Acute Medicine, Trauma or Surgery. However increasingly we are seeing that newly qualified nurses wish to experience cross speciality placements which are supported across the divisions.

Our Preceptorship Team works closely with clinical areas to ensure that both our Band 5 nurse/s on rotation and the ward staff are well supported.

Rotation is a fantastic way to begin your career at NUH, gaining knowledge and experience across a range of specialities and seeing the trust from a wider perspective.

As part of the rotation programme you will receive:

  • A bespoke preceptorship plan for rotation to structure your programme
  • Access to the Acute Care Skills Course
  • A Preceptorship Induction Day
  • Protected learning time in the first year of practice
  • Group clinical supervision every eight weeks

The Newly Qualified advert

The newly qualified nurse advert was introduced in 2021; this advert promotes the preceptorship offer at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) and also the importance of attracting, supporting and developing new starters at the Trust.

Student Nurse Open Days

The open days were introduced in 2021 and coincide with the recruitment events, these events are an opportunity for student nurses to discover what a career at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) would be like for them.
