Green Week – Sustainable Travel and Transport

One of the core elements of NUH’s Green Plan is sustainable travel and the need to promote more cycling and walking, electric vehicles and public transport.

We know the challenge there is in removing barriers to sustainable transport and travel. The NUH Staff Travel Survey shows that 85% of travel emissions come from cars, while only 10% come from public transport with 51% of staff commuting by car on their own.  The same is true for patients and visitors.

It is essential that figure is reduced and our Green Plan outlines how we intend to do that, including:

  • Redoing the need to travel with Smart Working and/or Work From Home initiatives
  • Using digital technology to increase the number of non-face to face appointments
  • investing in and promoting the infrastructure for walking and cycling
  • Expanding schemes that promote public transport and car sharing
  • Reintroducing the Trust Car Parking Permit system
  • Installing electric vehicle charging points.

We currently have a very successful Travel to Work Scheme which allows staff to take advantage of the discounted advance travel pass rates offered by most transport operators without. There are also other schemes NUH offers for staff  to encourage cycling or car sharing. You can find more details on our website - Travel to Work | NUH

We will also be looking at our carbon footprint associated to the delivery of goods and services to our sites, examining our procurement policies to promote carbon reduction in the NHS supply chain.

These initiatives will remove barriers that prevent people from accessing NUH via means that increases the Trust’s carbon footprint, helping the planet and making the air we breathe cleaner.
