Construction begins on £6million project to replace two Cath Labs

Construction on relocating and refurbishing two life-saving Cath Labs at City Hospital has begun at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
A Cath Lab is used for patients experiencing chest pain and uses an X-ray and a catheter to see what is happening in the heart.
The two current Cath Labs at City Hospital are now too small to be compliant with updated standards, and the equipment within the labs is reaching the end of its natural life and needs replacing.
We are therefore taking the opportunity to invest £6million to upgrade the two labs and relocate them so that they are next to the other two Cath Labs on our City Hospital site and within the Trent Cardiac Centre - a Regional Centre of Excellence.
Not only will this move improve patient experience as patients will be closer to the rest of the Cardiology provision, but the new rooms will also be larger to meet current clinical standards and will be fitted out with brand new ventilation and new equipment.
Peter Allsopp, Directorate General Manager, said:
“We’re excited to be able to significantly improve the environment for our patients who deserve to have an excellent experience when they come to us for treatment and our staff who need a good working environment.
“In addition, the new Cath Labs will enable additional procedures to be undertaken at NUH which will have a positive impact upon patient waiting times.”
As part of the construction, the electrical infrastructure to this area of City Hospital is in the process of being updated, which will assure the supply to vital departments and equipment including X-ray and Interventional Radiology.
As part of the construction, existing offices within the Trent Cardiac Centre will be relocated to a new unit adjacent the Rainbow bridge. This will provide an improved working environment for our Cardiology staff.
The Cath Labs are being built by Hilton Bodill Construction and are due to be operational early next year.
