Record-breaking year for Nottingham’s hospitals

From delivering almost 10,000 babies to a patient arriving at Queen’s Medical Centre’s  Emergency Department every 3.5 minutes, Nottingham’s hospitals have had their busiest year ever.

2018 was a big year for Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH), with BBC Two’s ‘Hospital’ documentary being filmed at the Trust in the first two months of the year during the worst winter on record for the NHS, which was watched by over two million people every week across the series.  This was followed by the Trust marking the 70th anniversary of the NHS with a BBC radio first ever live broadcast of open heart surgery from the Trent Cardiac Centre based at Nottingham City Hospital.

An army of 15,000 staff and 1,600 volunteers keep Nottingham’s hospitals (QMC and Nottingham City Hospital) running 24/7, 365 days a year – many of them behind the scenes. Here’s a look back at NUH’s year in numbers:

In 2018 we:

  • Received 1.7m calls to switchboard
  • Over 60 health ambassadors supporting activities and events in 22 local schools and colleges

Tracy Taylor, Chief Executive at NUH said: “There is so much for us to celebrate and be proud of in 2018, and very many examples of how we have further improved our services for patients and their families over the last year.

“I would like to say a huge thank you and happy New Year to all our staff and volunteers for all they do throughout the year to keep our hospitals running. Every member of Team NUH has a vital role to play in providing the best possible experience for our patients, for which we are grateful. Thank you also to our local community for supporting their local hospitals and to our partners, patients and critical friends who help us on our journey of continuous improvement.”
