Referral Process and Patient Pathways
Depending on the type of referral, the time frame for your required attendance for the procedure will vary:
- 2 Week Wait Referral: You will need to have your procedure within 14 days of receiving your referral.
- 2 Week Wait Direct to Test Referral: You will need to have your procedure within 14 days of receiving your referral.
- Urgent Referral: You will need to have your procedure within 21 days of receiving your referral.
- Routine Referral: We aim to schedule your procedure within 41 days of receiving your referral, however due to waiting list times, this may be longer.
- Planned/Surveillance Referral: We aim to schedule your procedure within 41 days of receiving your referral, however due to waiting list times, this may be longer.
Booking Your Procedure
A member of the endoscopy administrative team will contact you via telephone to schedule your procedure within the required time frame. They will discuss the procedure details and necessary preparation and answer any questions you may have. After finalising the details and agreeing on a date, you will receive confirmation of the appointment date, time, procedure information, and pre-procedure information via post. If your appointment is within the next few days, the information can be emailed to you instead.
It may be necessary for you to speak to a member of our Nursing Pre-Assessment team prior to your procedure and the administrator booking your appointment will let you know if you require this. If you do, they will arrange a date and time for them to call you. This will be short telephone call to check details such and medical history and any medications you are taking, and ensure you are prepared for your procedure. They will also be able to answer any questions you may have.
Booking Confirmation
You will receive a confirmation letter detailing your appointment date/time, information about your procedure, pre-procedure information, and for colonoscopy procedures, bowel preparation and instructions.
You will also receive a text message regarding your appointment.

DNAs — We experience a high number of Did Not Attends in Endoscopy, where patients do not attend their booked procedure and their slot is wasted. We have a high number of patients on our waiting list that our team are working hard to ensure are seen as soon as possible, so please, if you cannot attend your appointment, let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your appointment to someone else.
