Tram-endous! Our Nurse of the Year unveils her Nottingham tram
Our Nurse of the Year, Sophie Robson, has today unveiled a Nottingham tram with her name on it.
The unique experience was her prize for achieving Overall Winner at the Nurse and Midwife of the Year contest on Monday 14 October.
Sophie, a Children’s Nurse, was named Nurse of the Year after receiving hundreds of votes from staff, patients, and the public, who praised her caring nature.
The Awards - aimed at highlighting the contribution of local nurses and midwives - is organised by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). Along with the Nottingham Post, Nottingham Express Transit (NET) is proud to have been headline sponsors since 2014.
Sophie was nominated for the award with glowing praise from the mother of a patient at Nottingham Children’s Hospital.
The official unveiling of her tram took place at NET’s Wilkinson Street depot this afternoon.
Mandie Sunderland, NUH Chief Nurse, was at the ceremony to wish Sophie well.
She said: “We’re so proud of Sophie and can’t wait to see the tram with her name on passing through the hospital grounds soon. It is a fantastic way to honour her for all her hard work and we’re very thankful to NET for helping us to raise the profile of nursing and midwifery at NUH in such a unique way.”
The Nurse and Midwife of the Year competition is run in conjunction with NET and the Nottingham Post.
Andrew Conroy, Chief Operating Officer at NET concessionaire Tramlink Nottingham, explained: “We’re looking forward to welcoming Sophie to the NET depot for what’s always a very special occasion.
“It gives us the opportunity to recognise the commitment, compassion and dedication that’s found across the nursing profession while celebrating the individual contribution made by the overall award winner by naming a tram in their honour.”
Sophie is the latest in an honourable line of Nottingham notables who have had trams named after them, including legendary characters and local heroes such as Robin Hood, Brian Clough, Torvill and Dean, and local actress Vicky McClure.
Last year’s Nurse of the Year Luisa Avanzado, also had a tram named after her.
