The very first NUH podcast is coming and staff say it is long overdue

It’s about time!”

When does it start?

I can’t wait to listen.

Yes, it’s true, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) has a brand-new podcast starting in April and these have been the reactions of our staff who want to share their stories.

Don’t say the Q word is not just about Nottingham and not just for Nottingham.

Because wherever you live and whichever NHS hospital is your local, the stories still have the same themes: passion, challenge, dedication, achievement. And above all else – care

You will hear stories of being inspired to care from personal experiences - like Beth, who received rehab from a serious injury as a child, and realised she wanted to help others so now works with our elderly patients as a geriatric physiotherapist.

And stories of overcoming the odds – like Seth whose pregnant wife was “told to prepare for the worst” and he was told by his doctor that if he fell asleep he may not wake up ever again and he wanted to share his story and thank the staff who saved his life.

And above all from the incredible humans behind every amazing story shared – like Lucy who is a leading consultant oncologist but also a 14 times Ironman champion, a former professional triathlete and co-founder of 5k your way, move against cancer.

NUH holds a wealth of stories with a workforce of over 19,000 caring for over a million patients every year. But this isn’t a podcast about numbers or stats it is about people sharing their human stories.

So, in our 20th anniversary of the two major hospitals in Nottingham, Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, merging to form NUH we decided it was about time that we shared those stories with the world.

Hosted by former BBC presenter and NUH external communications manager, Sally Pepper, Don’t  say the Q word is a podcast to shine a light on the incredible staff and patients in one of the largest and busiest acute teaching trusts in England.

You will hear voices who speak for all staff and patients across the NHS and who are the beating heart of Nottingham’s City Hospital, Queen’s Medical Centre, Ropewalk House and the National Rehabilitation Centre.

Don’t Say The Q Word will inspire you, educate you and move you.

Available on all podcast apps from April 3rd 2026

Listen to it. Watch it. But whatever you do – Don’t say the Q word!
