14,00 patients make NUH one of the most research-active hospitals

Published today, the Research and Innovation Annual Report for 2019-20 shows that over 14,000 patients and almost £26 million of investment have made NUH one of the top hospitals in the country for clinical research.
In 2019-20 NUH continued to be at the forefront of clinical research development in the country, based on National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) data. A total of 474 clinical trials involving 14,118 adults and children took place in our hopsitals, making NUH the third most active research hospital in England.
Talking about another successful year, Clinical Director for Research and Innovation at NUH, Professor Stephen Ryder said: "We are particularly proud of the breadth of clinical professionals now engaged in research through our development of clinical academic careers. Both the NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre, which is hosted by NUH, and the Institute of Nursing and Midwifery Care Excellence have enabled us to expand training and education for professionals at every stage of their careers. This year their hard work has been recognised with national Fellowship and Lectureship awards."
The 474 research trials, carried out by over 400 staff from a variety of professions, prioritised diseases which have a high prevalence in the East Midlands. For example, 2,685 cancer patients helped deliver 106 different research studies.
The research delivery and management structure at NUH is entirely funded by external grants, awards and commercial income. In the last year Research and Innovation income was £25.9m.
