Professor Ravi Mahajan named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list
Professor Ravi Mahajan has been awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.
With just under 35 years of NHS experience, Professor Mahajan initially qualified in anaesthesia in India in 1985, coming to the UK three years later. As well as holding the role of Professor of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Nottingham University Hospitals, his vast career has seen him become Vice-President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, and later the college's President for three years.
Speaking of his CBE, Professor Ravi Mahajan said: “I am pleased and humbled on being recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. This indeed is an acknowledgement of the hard work of so many individuals who have unconditionally supported me and have been generous with their time and commitment in everything that we have achieved together so far.”
Just a few of his career highlights include his involvement in developing the Safe Anaesthesia Liaison Group, the National Institute for Academic Anaesthesia, the Health Services Research Centre and more recently the Centre for Perioperative Care. The Royal College of Anaesthetists notes that Ravi "was one of the first to apply research methodology to patient safety, becoming one of the country’s experts in this field." Dr Fiona Donald, the President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists said in an article about Ravi's award:
"I am absolutely delighted both personally, and on behalf of the specialty, that Professor Mahajan’s many achievements have been recognised in this way. Ravi’s wisdom and tireless efforts have improved the lives of countless patients in the UK and abroad, and he has also been a generous and wise mentor to generations of colleagues. His leadership during the pandemic has been exemplary and I am honoured to have worked alongside him."
As well as this, he acts as a shining exemplar to international medical graduates who are seeking to hold leadership positions in the speciality. On top of his clinical and academic responsibilities, Ravi also takes the time to support charities; examples include funds he has raised for British Heart Foundation, Diabetes UK and charities in India.
