Pathology Team raise hundreds for Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes Charity

The Pathology Team at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) have raised more than £800 for a charity that deliver life-saving medical supplies and samples for the NHS.
The money has been donated to the Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes Charity, who provide an out-of-ours emergency transport service to the NHS and deliver: Blood units, samples, medical files, breast milk for premature babies and other urgent medical items between hospitals.
Last year the team of highly-skilled volunteers delivered almost 100,000 medical supplies and samples for NUH.
They also travelled over 99,000 miles on round-trips and carried out over 6,000 jobs, making a £97,607 saving for the organisation.
Their longest one-way journey was 135 miles which saw them collect items from Southmead Hospital in Bristol and they were delivered to City Hospital.
In April 2020, the charity delivery service for Heel Prick samples to Sheffield changed from "emergency winter cover" into a permanent offer, collecting four days a week from both the Queen’s Medical Centre and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at City Hospital. They have delivered 4,803 of these samples in the year.
Rebecca Walker, Service Manager for the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Nottingham University Hospitals said: “Blood Bikes have been providing a vital service to our hospitals for a few years now and have been very responsive during the Covid-19 pandemic and we wanted to give something back to them for the care they provide to our patients”.
Chairman of Nottinghamshire Blood Bikes, John Devlin, said “It is amazing news that the Pathology Team have raised this money and it is very much appreciated, especially since our fundraising has been largely curtailed elsewhere. Thank you to everyone who was involved in the fundraising.”
