NUH announces £3.7million refurbishment to Queen’s Medical Centre main entrance
A refurbishment of the main entrance of the Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) is underway after Nottingham University Hospitals secured £3.7million to carry out essential roadworks and construction in the area.
The project is vital to re-waterproof the ground below the road surface immediately outside the QMC Main Entrance and which is above the A&E department, to prevent water leaks and damage to this important clinical area.
Work also needs to be conducted to strengthen the two bridges leading to the main entrance as they currently cannot be used by larger or heavier vehicles.
Therefore, while these works are taking place, NUH is also taking the opportunity to improve and modernise the primary entrance of our main acute hospital site. The project will therefore also provide a redesigned car park, new drop off spaces, a refurbished canopy cover for pedestrians, new secure bicycle storage, and a new Main Entrance lobby.
As NUH marks 20 years since its formation, the investment will provide an entrance that reflects the importance of Queen's Medical Centre as one of the region's largest acute hospitals.
Stuart Malcolm, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities at NUH, said:
"This is an important investment in the infrastructure of Queen’s Medical Centre that will help protect critical clinical areas, improve the resilience of our estate and enhance the experience for patients, visitors and staff.
“While the essential waterproofing and structural works are our priority, we are pleased to be able to take this opportunity to modernise the Main Entrance and create a more welcoming arrival point for everyone using the hospital.
“We recognise that these works will cause some temporary disruption and we would like to thank our patients, visitors and colleagues for their patience and understanding while we deliver these important improvements."
We are able to carry out this work to our Main Entrance thanks to £3.7million from the government’s Estates Safety Fund which supports backlog maintenance.
During the work being carried out, access to our QMC Main Entrance will be for patient and visitor drop off only and there will be a one-way traffic flow. Patient transport ambulances and emergency ambulances will be permitted to stop outside Main Entrance as necessary, but are requested to drop off and collect their patients as quickly as possible.
In addition, there will be no Blue Badge parking provision immediately outside the QMC Main Entrance while these works are carried out. Blue Badge users will need to use an alternative car park. Patients and visitors requiring parking should use one of our alternative NUH car parks or consider travelling by taxi or public transport.
Once completed in spring 2027, the improvements will provide a safer, more resilient and more welcoming entrance for the thousands of patients, visitors and staff who attend Queen's Medical Centre each year.
