NRC opening to patients delayed until Spring 2026 as building is not ready

The country’s first NHS National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC), run and staffed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, now hopes to open in Spring 2026 as work continues on the building’s water system.

Building contractors, Integrated Health Projects (IHP), are still in the process of completing the work on the building’s water system which has still not yet met the rigorous safety and quality standards for the patients who will be cared for at the cutting-edge centre.

In the meantime, patients continue to be treated at Linden Lodge, our specialist rehabilitation unit based at Nottingham City Hospital, and by the same highly-skilled staff who will be transferring over to the NRC once the building is ready.

Additional rehabilitation beds were also opened on Ward C24 at Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC) to enable us to support the wider cohort of patients we will be treating at the NRC, so that more NUH patients can benefit from enhanced rehabilitation as soon as possible.

Paul Matthew, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Senior Responsible Officer for the NRC at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), said:

"We still have not yet been able to accept the keys to the National Rehabilitation Centre from our building contractors, Integrated Health Projects (IHP).

“IHP are still in the process of completing the work on the building’s water system which has still not yet met our rigorous safety and quality standards for the patients we will be caring for.

“Once the work on the water system has been completed, our NUH teams will then need a mobilisation period to prepare to move our first patients into the NRC and therefore this will likely now be in the Spring.

“We are disappointed and frustrated by this delay as we are operationally ready to move into the building, but we know that once we are open to our first patients, the NRC will be vital in delivering life-changing rehabilitation for patients in the East Midlands and beyond."
