A new healthcare partnership between experts from the University of Nottingham, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) and GE HealthCare, will explore new ways to improve patient care, advance healthcare innovation and support education.

Representatives from the organisations met on 14 September in Whitehall to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in support of the partnership which brings together clinical and research delivery expertise from NUH, academic research and innovation from the University, and the global healthcare technology expertise of GE HealthCare. Together this creates a framework for the organisations to explore opportunities to address some of the key challenges currently facing healthcare.

The partnership will focus on shared areas of interest including technology, digital data and analytics, solutions and care pathways, with opportunities for collaboration across research, innovation, healthcare delivery and education.

The three organisations have a longstanding relationship, with previous collaborations including PhD studentships and clinical studies.

The relationship has also supported the development and translation of healthcare innovation. In 2017, GE HealthCare acquired University of Nottingham spin-out Monica Healthcare, whose technology enabled expectant mothers to move more freely during labour while being monitored using an advanced wireless foetal monitoring device.

The new partnership aims to build on this history and explore further opportunities, including potential collaborations with spin-out companies and the development of new approaches to healthcare delivery.

The partnership follows a series of meetings and visits between the organisations. Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, Professor Jane Norman, met GE HealthCare’s Chris Bonnett at Wilton Park in October 2025, followed by a GE HealthCare delegation visiting Nottingham in December.

A further meeting, which was joined by NUH colleagues, in May 2026 strengthened discussions around the strategic partnership.

GE HealthCare colleagues have also visited the University’s Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre at University Park and Queen’s Medical Centre, alongside the NIHR Clinical Research Facilities in Nottingham for both adults, and children and young persons, at Queen’s Medical Centre.

Mark Simmonds, Deputy Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals said: “NUH is excited for the collaborative opportunities in Research, Innovation and Healthcare Delivery that signing this MoU will enable.

“It will allow us to provide even better patient care in the long-term and offers the prospect of new innovative research opportunities to attract colleagues to Nottingham.”

Roy Tappin, General Manager UK and Ireland at GE HealthCare said: “The depth and breadth of both existing and potential collaborative activity is immense. It is therefore wonderful to be formally signing this Memorandum of Understanding today.”

Professor Jane Norman, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, said: “The University of Nottingham, NUH and GE HealthCare all share a common interest in transforming healthcare delivery. This exciting strategic partnership will allow us to advance innovation and support education and ultimately improve the health of the people we serve."

The MoU establishes a framework for the three organisations to identify and explore mutually beneficial opportunities in areas of common interest, with the shared ambition of translating expertise, research and technology into meaningful benefits for patients, staff and the wider healthcare system.
