National Rehabilitation Centre collaborates with Movementum on post-treatment support

A new partnership between the country’s first National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) and wellbeing company Movementum Natural Health Systems aims to establish post-rehabilitation support programmes for patients leaving the NRC.

The NRC is the first of its kind – a 70-bed, state-of-the-art specialist rehabilitation centre for NHS patients who have experienced a life-changing illness or injury, run and staffed by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH).

Movementum Natural Health Systems is a wellbeing company which works to integrate the expertise of the sports science and health and fitness industries, empowering them to play a crucial role in patient recovery and preventative health.

Through this collaboration, the hope is to establish a ‘Movementum Hub’ at the NRC where patients and their families can be offered a comprehensive three-year post-treatment support programme to help them to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to encourage adherence to their rehabilitation plans when they return home or into the community.

Also being explored is a colleague wellbeing programme to support staff welfare, community, collaboration and purpose, to help colleagues to feel their best at work and to reduce the risk of burnout.

NRC Director Miriam Duffy said:

“Here at the NRC, our patients will be receiving the very best and cutting-edge rehabilitation available in the NHS.

“However, a patient’s rehabilitation journey doesn’t stop when they leave the NRC. By partnering with Movementum, in addition to the normal outpatient NHS provision our patients will receive, this allows us to explore what enhanced support we can offer our patients and their families.

“We hope that this will enable us to support our patients from immediate post-rehabilitation through to maintaining long-term lifestyle changes, aiming to prevent complications and readmissions in their life-long rehabilitation journey.”

As part of this partnership, Movementum professionals plan to deliver programmes in select schools deemed to have greatest social impact need to help to improve long-term wellbeing, in order to educate children and their teachers from a young age about the importance of fitness and wellbeing.

Another aim for this collaboration is to establish a new role based at the NRC – the Movement Health Professional. This role is specifically designed for under-25s from Sports and Exercise Medicine or Science and health and fitness backgrounds, and will work to bridge the gap between acute clinical care and long-term wellbeing as well as creating regional jobs.

Movementum founder Stephen Price said:

“This collaboration marks a revolutionary step towards transforming national wellbeing.

“We are bridging the critical gap between acute clinical care and long-term health, ensuring patients don't just recover, but thrive for years after leaving the centre.

“By combining performance technology and methodologies with a new generation of 'Movement Health Professionals', we can support not just patients and their families, but also clinicians and the wider community, including local schools.”

About the National Rehabilitation Centre

The National Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) is a £105million programme which will create a 70-bed, purpose-built and highly energy efficient new facility as part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme.  The specialist NHS facility will be built on the Stanford Hall Rehabilitation Estate near Loughborough, home to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre which opened in 2018. The NRC is due to open in 2026.

In addition to providing excellent patient care, the NRC will also be a national hub for innovation, cutting-edge research and development, and training and education. Therefore, the NRC has national network of 26 universities across the country to ensure that the NRC remains at the forefront of rehabilitation research and expertise.
