Infected Blood Inquiry (IBI) the independent public inquiry

The infected blood inquiry (IBI) is an independent public inquiry, chaired by Sir Brian Langstaff, which was set up to investigate the circumstances around patients infected with HIV and hepatitis (B and C) due to blood and infected blood products in the NHS in the 1970s-1980s. This included many patients who were infected following blood transfusions, and patients with haemophilia and other bleeding disorders.

A statement from Nottingham University Hospitals

Dr Keith Girling, Medical Director at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The publication of Sir Brian Langstaff’s report into infected blood products is hugely significant for the families, patients, and wider communities affected by this unacceptable tragedy.

“We offer our apologies and sympathies to the those affected for the avoidable suffering, pain and loss they experienced.

“We will now take some time to carefully digest the contents of the report and recommendations before sharing our next steps.”
