Green Plan will reduce carbon footprint, save money and benefit patients

To coincide with Green Week at Nottingham University Hospitals, the Turst has published its plan to become Net Zero by 2040, building on work it has been doing for many years to reduce emissions, save money and provide a better quality of life for patients and staff.
In 2018 NUH Trust approved the Sustainable Development Strategy. Achievements from that have included:
- £25 million invested to replace aged gas and coal fired boilers at City hospital with more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly technologies
- £50,000 per year saved through better recovery of unused pharmaceuticals which helps reduce waste
- 10% of the NUH workforce on the discounted Travel to Work Scheme.
The Green Plan sets out the next phase of the journey to Net Zero and will mean:
- Improving the energy efficiency of NUH buildings
- Expanding sustainable travel and transport
- Increasing recycling and reducing waste.
Director of Estates and Facilities Management and NUH Board nominated lead for the Green Plan, Andrew Chatten, said “We are committed to doing everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint. The NUH Green Plan 2022-2025 reflects the need to take action now and if we succeed in delivering the objectives in this plan we will be able to reduce seen an 80% reduction in our carbon footprint by 2032.
“Through our involvement with the Nottingham Green Partnership we know Nottingham is leading the rest of the country and we are proud to be contributing to that effort. Our plans will not just be better for the planet but will also help the Trust save money in the long term and will also help improve the quality of life for patients and staff.”
The Trust’s long term vision is that by 2040 it will have achieved a Net Zero carbon operation for all its emissions from heating and energy use and 80% reduction of its Carbon Footprint indirect emissions, such as procurement. Its Green Plan provides a roadmap to achieve a net zero carbon operation, focusing on nine areas of action. Over the next week articles going into detail on some of those areas will be uploaded to the NUH Website - Latest news | NUH
