Consultant’s delight as return to NUH ‘work home’ strengthens international ties

A knee surgeon who trained in Nottingham has spoken of his delight at returning to the city as a consultant.

Jimmy Ng’s appointment strengthens ties with hospitals in Malaysia, where he completed the pre-clinical phase of his training at the International Medical University before starting his clinical phase at the University of Nottingham’s Medical School, graduating in 2011.

Mr Ng has been appointed as Consultant Trauma and Soft Tissue Knee Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust, where he was an orthopaedic trainee on rotation for six years. He will be joining us after he completes a Sports Surgery Fellowship in Australia.

“I’ve wanted to be an orthopaedic surgeon, specialising in knee surgery, since Medical School,” said Mr Ng. “I have always been active in sports and tore my anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing basketball. Going through the injury, surgery and rehab got me interested in orthopaedics and particularly knee injuries.

“I did foundation and core surgical training in East Midlands; I completed orthopaedic training in East Midlands Deanery in 2021.”

Mr Ng completed subspecialist fellowships at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Royal Derby Hospital.

“I am excited about the opportunity to apply the skills and experience I have gained from my fellowships to provide the best treatment for my patients,” said Mr Ng.

“I chose NUH because of the clinical and academic excellence of the department. I strive to provide the best treatment for my patients and working in an excellent department will help me achieve that.

“Having trained in Nottingham I have a good relationship with the department and have always considered NUH my ‘work home’.

“Nottingham is a vibrant city with lots to offer and our family – my wife and our two children – we enjoy living here.

“I am delighted to be appointed as consultant trauma and soft tissue knee surgeon at Nottingham – and I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped me along the way.”

Dr Keith Girling, Medical Director at NUH NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted to welcome Jimmy back to NUH. We look forward his return and the experience that he will bring with him from Malaysia and Australia. He will join a regionally and nationally recognised team of surgeons and bring additional strength to an excellent team.”

Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at the University of Nottingham and shortly to become its Senior Strategy Adviser in Medicine, said: “I am very pleased that Jimmy Ng will be joining the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust and returning to our city. It is particularly exciting that Jimmy has been appointed as the Trust’s first Consultant to have experienced, first-hand, the relationship between University of Nottingham and University of Nottingham Malaysia.

Professor Van-Tam – who returned to Nottingham in May 2022 after becoming a household name for his service as Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England during the Covid pandemic – added: “Jimmy brings a wealth of knowledge, specialism and understanding. His work will help improve healthcare practices and outcomes for people living in the city and county, as well as helping to further strengthen the relationship between our Schools of Medicine in Nottingham and Malaysia with the city’s hospitals.”
