24 Hours in A&E Episode 5 - Teenage Dreams
The next episode of 24 Hours in A&E, filmed at the Queen’s Medical Centre, airs on Tuesday 31 January, 9pm, on Channel 4.
The RTS award-winning documentary's new home, Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham, is one of the busiest A&E departments in Europe.
This epsiode, we meet three female university students, all studying in Nottingham, who end up in A&E after a night out and have potentially been victims of spiking. They talk of the pressures they face as young women.
In October 2021, a wave of needle spiking attacks was reported across the country and Home Secretary, Priti Patel, ordered an urgent report into the issue. Many reports came from Nottingham and staff at Queens Medical Centre treat a number of suspected victims of the attacks.
We meet three female university students, all studying in Nottingham, who end up in A&E after a night out and have potentially been victims of spiking. They talk of the pressures they face as young women,
20-year-old Kate, is rushed into resus in QMC, following a collapse in a nightclub where she stopped breathing normally and received CPR from a friend. Nurse Sarah who treats Kate, also reveals her own experience of having her drink spiked earlier when she was a student.
In the Urgent Treatment Unit, students Sarah and Pavni meet in the waiting room. They are both concerned they too have been spiked with needles on nights out. While they are being treated, 19-year-old Pavni reveals the racist abuse she faced growing up. 21-year-old Sarah tells us about the impact that covid had on the university experience and just as things are opening up, she’s now faced with having to overcome the impact of being attacked.
