What is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a procedure to look at the inside of your large bowel (colon) using a flexible telescope.
What preparation is required for a Colonoscopy?
Bowel Preparation
You will need to take bowel preparation for a colonoscopy, below are links to information regarding how to take the bowel preparation required for your procedure. There are multiple types of bowel preparation, you will be informed either by letter or by telephone which one you are to take and which instructions to follow, and will receive written information on how to take it.
Low fibre diet
You will be advised to follow a low fibre diet, there is a link to this below, including vegetarian and vegan options.
Anticoagulation
You may be required to stop your anticoagulation or blood thinning medication, but this is on an individual basis, and you will be sent information on whether you are required to stop this for the procedure. Please do not stop your medication unless you have been instructed to do so, and contact us if you are unsure.
Anticoagulant/blood thinning information
If you are taking anticoagulants such as Warfarin, Rivaroxaban, Dabigatran, Apixaban, Edoxaban or Clopidogrel, you will receive guidance over the telephone when booking your appointment regarding the management of your medication.
Additionally, you will receive documentation via post detailing instructions on how to manage your medication. If you currently have an appointment booked and have not received information about anticoagulants, please contact the administrative team.
