The Purpose of this Statement
The purpose of this document is to outline how NUH commits to being accountable, transparent, answerable and responsible to the public that we serve. It sets out expectations for how NUH will:
- Be open and transparent with patients, staff and the public in line with its *duty of candour.
- Explain decisions and actions clearly, especially regarding use of public funds and delivery of care.
- Engage meaningfully with stakeholders, including patients and communities.
- Demonstrate integrity and responsiveness in governance and leadership.
- Be held accountable for outcomes, performance and conduct.
- Deal with mistakes in an open and transparent way.
For a large public institution like NUH, accountability is not optional - it is a fundamental part of our duty to the public. Through accountability, we affirm our commitment to ethical governance, effective stewardship of public resources and the delivery of high-quality services that meet the needs of our diverse and changing population.
Accountability helps us maintain the integrity and reputation of the Trust, ensuring that we uphold the highest standards of care and make decisions that are always in the best interest of those we serve.
This Statement of Intent also reflects NUH’s alignment with national priorities, including the NHS Just and Learning Culture Charter. This charter reinforces the importance of building trust through fairness, transparency and compassionate leadership, ensuring staff and patients are supported when things go wrong and that continuous learning is at the heart of how we improve.
