Helping you to recover well from your Caesarean Birth

Enhanced Recovery is an evidence based approach designed to help people recover more quickly from surgery, including having a Caesarean birth.

After you leave theatre

  • Eat and drink normally, as soon as you feel able to.
  • Drink enough so that you don't feel thirsty.
  • Additional pain and anti-sickness medication is available if you need it.
  • Take regular pain relief when they are offered, even if you feel comfortable at the time.

A member of staff will help you the first time you get up, this is usually possible 6 hours after your baby is born.

Being mobile as much as possible, will help you feel better, improve your recovery and reduce your risk ofgetting a blood clot.

You will not be able to lift anything heavier than your baby for a few weeks, make sure you have someone to help you at home.

Your catheter will be removed once you are able to walk around. We will ask you to measure the amount the first time you pass urine.

Many women are able to go home the day after their Caesarean birth, as long as neither you nor your baby need extra monitoring.
