Specialist Laboratory

This is Specialist Laboratory which incorporates a few disciplines, these are Neuropathology, Paediatric and Immunohistology.

Neuropathology

Neuropathology provides a full range of diagnostic services including: surgical neuropathology, pituitary, peripheral nerve, ophthalmic, and muscle pathology. It undertakes specialist post-mortem examinations for the diagnosis of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases including CJD.  Autopsies are also performed for H.M. Coroner, including independent and second opinion cases.  Whole brain referrals from other institutions are also accepted by prior arrangement.  The department has a wide repertoire of diagnostic antibodies and histochemistry is available.  In conjunction with the University Hospitals of Leicester, we also offer a diagnostic electron microscopy service.  There are active research interests in paediatric oncology, dementia and diagnostic imaging.   Referrals can be made by contacting the neuropathology laboratory.

Paediatric Pathology

This section provides a service for surgical paediatric including Hirschsprung’s, fetal and neonatal pathology, post mortems and fetal and placental examinations.

Immunohistochemistry

The Department of Cellular Pathology offers a comprehensive immunohistochemistry service on cases that require further analysis and clarification of diagnostic problems.
