The NUH phlebotomy department has developed a bespoke venepuncture training course to provide a good level of theory along with practical experience in order to close the gap between learning the skill on a training aid and performing venepuncture on live patients.

Trainees will receive a wealth of knowledge from one of our senior phlebotomists with over 10 years’ experience along with hints, tips and troubleshooting advice. In addition, compared with a number of other external courses, trainees will receive practical experience on real patients under close 1:1 supervision, to gain confidence performing venepuncture.

Our years of experience in teaching these skills ensure that the course is designed to meet the needs of all trainees from those with no previous experience up to those who may simply need to refresh their skills.

All our venepuncture trainers have been trained to NAP requirements, and all training material has been verified by NAP, so they are able to provide the most up-to-date training, knowledge and skills.

The training course is suitable for all staff working in the NHS or a similar healthcare setting. We are also happy to receive applications for training from individuals who do not currently work in healthcare but are looking to gain some skills for use in a future new career.

The course takes the form of two full days, as well as an additional six hours booked within six weeks of Day 2 to attain a specified number of competencies.

New courses for 2016/17

We take both our patient and colleague safety very seriously. We regularly review our training programs and look to improve the opportunities we can offer to our trainees in order to ensure that we teach the safest and most appropriate techniques and skills to ensure complete competence in carrying out the full venepuncture procedure.

With this in mind the NUH Phlebotomy Department has developed some new courses to continue in our support of our healthcare colleagues practising both within the NHS as well as our external partners.  We are pleased to now be able to offer:
