X Ray Guided Breast Interventional Techniques (XBIT)

This is a collaborative partnership between Nottingham International Breast Education Centre (NIBEC) and Birmingham City University (BCU).

THIS MODULE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR OVERSEAS STUDENTS

This module provides the opportunity for radiographers in mammography to develop the skills to perform breast interventional techniques under x-ray guidance in line with national guidelines, protocols and scope of practice.

Applicants should have completed modules in Mammography Practice (15 credits) and Theory of Breast Disease Diagnosis (15 credits) prior to applying to undertake this module.

XBIT provides 15 credits at level 7 and forms part of the postgraduate certificate in breast interventional technique (60 credits).

You will attend a two day theory course at NIBEC. You will undertake supervised practice, supported by an approved mentor in your own workplace.   Clinical trainers will be available at the NIBEC to provide clinical and academic support to both the student and mentor.

Assessment for the XBIT module is an important part of the process and your ability and knowledge will be evaluated by:

  • A log book of clinical experience
  • A written component
  • A VIVA style assessment

A final assessment will take place at NIBEC.

This module will enable the individual to develop their academic confidence to further their career as an autonomous, independent practitioner and to contribute to the changing role of the radiographer in imaging today. The student will gain the knowledge and skills to make decisions and apply them as an effective part of the multidisciplinary breast team.

Image Interpretation & Reporting (IIR)

This is a collaborative partnership between Nottingham International Breast Education Centre (NIBEC) and Birmingham City University (BCU).

THIS MODULE IS NOT SUITABLE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

This module provides the opportunity for radiographers in mammography to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to analyse and interpret mammographic images in the screening, new referral and post-operative follow-up situations in line with national guidelines, protocols and scope of practice.

Applicants should have completed modules Mammography Practice (15 credits) and Theory of Breast Disease Diagnosis (15 credits) (or equivalent) prior to applying to undertake this module.

IIR provides 30 credits at level 7 and along with the 2 pre-requisite modules, completes the Postgraduate Certificate in Breast Image Reporting (60 credits).

Students will require a mentor (usually a consultant radiologist) in their own institution.  This is an important aspect of the module, enabling the student to develop their image interpretation technique with a strong emphasis on clinical relevance.

Academic support is available as required – online (via Moodle) or by telephone.

You will attend a three-day theory course at NIBEC.  Later in the module, you will have the opportunity to join the clinical team at Nottingham Breast Institute for a few days, to witness the procedures and technologies available in a busy screening and symptomatic service.

Assessment for the IIR module is an important part of the process and your ability and knowledge will be evaluated by:

  • Written components – a written assignment, OSCE-style case-report writing and your individual portfolio/logbook
  • An IMPROVES assessment (akin to, and designed by the creators of PERFORMS)

The assessments will take place at NIBEC.

This module will enable individuals to develop their academic confidence to further their career as autonomous, independent practitioners. The student will gain the knowledge and skills required to make appropriate clinical decisions and recommendations, facilitating multidisciplinary team working.
