Three Year Olds Alfie and Archer Brighten-up NUH

Staff, patients and visitors at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust joined together on Thursday 1 December to watch the switch-on of the Christmas Lights decorating the exterior of the two hospital sites, along with the unveiling of a large Christmas tree located just outside the main entrance of the Queens Medical Centre.

NUH Chief Executive Anthony May and Nottingham Hospital Charity Chief Executive Barbara Cathcart were in attendance along with Alfie Barker, age 3, and Archer Crawford-Speakman, also aged 3. They were the guests of honour and had the job of switching on this year’s Christmas Lights at NUH.

Alfie and Archer are currently being looked after at the Childrens Hospitals and were joined by their families for the lights switch on. They said it was a really nice thing to be a part of and were particularly grateful to all the staff at NUH who had been looking after Alfie and Archer. Speaking about what Alfie and Archer had asked Santa for Christmas this year, they PAW Patrol Lookout Tower and Toniebox were on the list.

Head of Estates and Facilities and NUH Mike Soroka said, “Making our buildings and clinical spaces nice environments to be in is really important, particularly at this festive time of year. We often hear from patients how enjoyable it is for them to see Christmas decorations outside their ward windows, helping patients feel Christmassy while away from home and in our care.”

The decorations were funded by the Nottingham Hospitals Charity. Barbara Cathcart, Chief Executive of Nottingham Hospitals Charity, said: “We’re proud to fund Christmas lights each year to bring festive cheer to patients, visitors and staff at Nottingham Hospitals. Alongside the bigger projects we fund, such as specialist equipment, medical research and refurbishments, these added extras can make a real difference to patients and their families during their time in hospital
