Team NUH supporting speedy recovery of Superkart champion
Dan Edwards, a multiple Superkart Grand Prix winner, is firmly on the road to recovery following a serious crash in 2017, thanks to the care he’s received from the nursing staff at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust.
Dan, a former British number one, suffered damage to both his legs while competing in a race in Ashbourne in October 2017, as well as a broken wrist. Having been initially treated at the Queen’s Medical Centre Dan has returned on a number of occasions to the ward F20 (Orthopaedics) for further treatment and rehabilitation, and unfortunately Dan’s right leg was amputated last week.
Dan said: “Since the accident I’ve been back to QMC on at least a dozen occasions. I could’ve gone to a more local place for treatment but it’s worth travelling almost two hours because the staff here are outstanding.”
Dan was suffering from compartment syndrome in his right leg (when there’s a large amount of pressure on the muscle tissue, blood vessels and nerves) and having to rely on a mobility scooter to get around. This led to the decision to have the amputation. He said: “Monday was a bad day for me. I turned up on the ward and was feeling really down and weak, they call it the post op blues. They said the best thing for me is to draw my curtains and just let it all out, which I did and I ended up sleeping all day and now feel a hundred times better.”
“Nothing is ever too much for them. You know that they’ve got so many other patients to see but it always feels like they are there for you. They put up with a lot and never let it get to them, they don’t get the credit they deserve.
Lindsay Warhurst, one of the staff nurses who’s been helping Dan during his visits. She said: “Dan is really great to be around, he’s so positive and always has a smile on his face.
“I’ve been on this ward for 16 years and it can be quite challenging at times. We treat a lot of elderly patients and those with dementia, so Dan is not the usual type of patient. We know Dan’s tweeted about the care he’s getting from the team and it’s so nice to be appreciated like that.”
