Team NUH in national spotlight

Staff and teams from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) have been shortlisted for three national awards from an 800-strong field of competition.

The 2019 Health Education England HEAT (Healthcare Education and Training) celebrate the importance education, training, leadership and workforce planning play in delivering high-quality compassionate healthcare in the NHS.

The NUH finalists are:

Emerging Leader of the Year

  • Jodi Shaw, Junior Sister on Ward B3 (emergency admissions ward) at QMC

System Transformation Champion of the Year

  • Nurse care practitioner team at the Nottingham Breast Institute (Nottingham City Hospital)

Inspiring Apprentice

  • Monica Korpal, Trainee Nursing Associate, Nottingham City Hospital

Monica is training to be a nursing associate at the Univeristy of Derby. She said: “I always wanted to be a nurse but only decided to take the plunge after my husband was treated for cancer.

“So I took the plunge in my 40s and I can honestly say it’s the happiest I’ve ever been in any job.”

“I’m still in shock at being shortlisted to be honest. It definitely confirms that I made the right decision to turn to nursing and hopefully this can inspire others. It’s never too late to follow your passion.”

Before joining Ward B3, Jodi worked in the Emergency Department and within Safeguarding.

She said: “It’s a huge surprise to be shortlisted. I’m shocked that someone has taken the time to nominate me.

“Obviously I’m so grateful to be recognised in this way, it’s really humbling. I think I’ve gotten this far so quickly because I’ve learnt so much from those around me. I’ve had great mentors and if I’m able to use that experience to help others then that’s amazing.”

And the Nurse Care Practitioners at the Nottingham Breast Institute have been shortlisted for System Transformation Champion of the Year.   This team of specialist nurses are trained to provide patients, their families and carers with information, physical and psychological care and support and practical advice from diagnosis and treatment, to rehabilitation and beyond.

The announcement follows the news that NUH has been shortlisted for three more awards at the Macmillan Professional Excellence Awards.

The winners will be announced on 18 July in London.
