NUH up for three awards at prestigious Macmillan event

The finalists for the 2019 Macmillan Professionals Excellence Awards have been announced, with Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH) NHS Trust shortlisted for three awards.

The awards are an opportunity to recognise the impact of Macmillan professionals and teams who have gone above and beyond expectations to help people with cancer live as fully as they can. Eighty seven nominations were received across three categories and a total of eight individuals and 16 teams from the UK were chosen.

The NUH finalists are:
Macmillan Cancer Pathways Redesign Programme Team - Integration Excellence

Laura Cutler, Macmillan East Midlands Teenage and Young Adult Survivorship Clinical Nurse Specialist - Integration Excellence

Macmillan East Midlands Brain Metastases Service - Innovation Excellence

The Macmillan Cancer Pathways Programme aims to improve patient outcomes and experience by redesigning cancer care follow-up pathways in breast, colorectal, gynaecological, lung, upper GI and urological cancers. Lisa Janiec, Programme Manager, said: “I’m so pleased that the team has been recognised in this way, it’s a reflection of their dedication and commitment to improving the lives of people with cancer.

“To have three nominations from NUH demonstrates the fantastic work we’re doing across the Trust.”

Laura Cutler has been shortlisted for a service she has established called BOOST. She said: “As health professionals we have limited knowledge of how to support teenagers and young adults back into education or work following cancer treatment.

“BOOST was set up to work in partnership with further education to provide access to careers advisors located in Leicester, Nottingham, Lincoln, Derby and Northampton Colleges.

“I am very proud of BOOST, and all of the support our BOOST professionals provide to young people with cancer, and delighted to be shortlisted for the Macmillan Excellence Awards 2019.”

The Macmillan East Midlands Brain Metastases Service launched last year with a specialist team to help improve care for patients with secondary brain tumours across the region. The service is the first of its kind in the region, meaning a population of 2.9 million would be within an hour's drive of a treatment centre.

The ceremony will take place on Thursday 7 November in Birmingham.
