Isa Ullah-Khan shortlisted for Apprentice of The Year in Our Health Heroes awards

Isa Ullah-Khan, an Apprentice Healthcare Assistant at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, has been shortlisted in the Our Health Heroes awards.

Isa, who worked in the hospital's Trauma and Orthopaedics department, has been shortlisted in the Apprentice of the Year category, which is sponsored by Unison.

Now in its fifth consecutive year, the awards  - which are organised by Skills for Health -recognise and honour the hard work and dedication carried out daily by thousands of health heroes across the UK.

Inspired by family members working at the Trust, Isa started his Level 2 Healthcare Support Worker Apprenticeship at the height of Covid-19 with no experience but overcame this challenge and now embraces all aspects of ward life.

He willingly takes on housekeeper duties, in addition to usual tasks, to ensure the smooth running of the ward. Another area Isa has excelled in is mouth care. Learning of its importance in training, he made it his mission to change that this vital personal care often gets missed, ensuring daily checks are completed.

Isa raises awareness for Black Lives Matter and the BAME network across the Trust and he is a superb role model.

Isa said: "Being nominated for apprentice of the was a truly amazing achievement for me, but when I found out that I'd been shortlisted for the award it made me extremely proud of all I have achieved during my time on Ward f19 at the Queens Medical Centre, as an apprentice.

"To have been recognised has given me the ability and confidence to share the knowledge I have gained in trauma & orthopedics and be able to share this with our new apprentices and to let them know that I am there to offer them guidance and support as they start their journey within surgery.

"I am excited to see what the future holds for me as I pursue a career within the NHS."

John Rogers, Chief Executive, Skills for Health, said: “In any given year, trying to identify a “winner” of Our Health Heroes isnear impossible. But after 2020, our NHS, health and social care staff in their entirety are truly deserving of an award.

"Reading through the submissions is humbling and emotional, in recognising the outstanding contribution by so many across the sector, over the last twelve months, and as we speak.”

"These unsung heroes, often working behind the scenes, have never asked for a medal, glory or even recognition, in fact, most if asked, simply brush it off by saying "it’s just part of my job".

"Yet, it is these individuals who form the backbone of our NHS, social care, and independent healthcare organisations, and without whom, our health system simply could not function."

With a shortlist of 15 exceptional finalists, Skills for Health together with partners NHS Employers, UNISON and Bevan Brittan, are now encouraging both members of the public, as well as health and social care colleagues, to have the final say on who should be crowned national winners at the virtual Awards ceremony in March.
