Former Nurse praises “unsung heroes” at NUH who helped her recovery

A retired Nottinghamshire nurse has praised the rehabilitation team who provided her care at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) following a brain aneurysm last year.

Beverley Plume suffered the aneurysm and a sub-arachnoid haemorrhage at her home in March last year and was treated at Linden Lodge Neuro Rehabilitation Unit, based at Nottingham City Hospital.

Beverley had spent more than 30 years working as a ward nurse at City Hospital and said: “The Linden Lodge team are a jewel in the crown of NUH. They have helped me in so many ways, helping me to feel empowered and like myself again. They have eradicated the word ‘can’t’ from my vocabulary and I could not have wished for a more caring competent and professional team!

“A turning point in my recovery was when my daughter arrived one afternoon to visit and I was grinning from ear to ear because of the progress I was making. My physiotherapist Kamal was fantastic - he videoed me when I took my first steps of recovery. The team are outstanding and have helped me gain confidence in all areas. They made me feel valued and gave me back a life worth living.”

Linden Lodge cares for patients who have suffered a range of brain injuries and those who have life-long conditions such as spinal cord injury, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis and other complex disabilities.

Kamal Manek, Senior Physiotherapist, was one of a team of therapists who cared for Beverley during her time on the Linden Lodge Neuro-Unit. He said: “It’s fantastic to hear that Beverley is doing well in her recovery and has so much more confidence.

“She is a very memorable patient and in her time spent here was very enthusiastic within our therapy sessions. She was a positive influence on other patients and helped develop a patient leaflet about what to expect within the rehabilitation environment which was very helpful and gratefully received by staff and patients.”

Helen Collett, Ward Manager at Linden Lodge, said: “It is an absolute honour to receive such praise from patients such as Beverley for the jobs we do every day and to be recognised for the work we do. We treat patients who have long term conditions and the work we do is essential in getting them on the way to where they need to be at home and for the future.”
