Emergency Nurses at Nottingham University Hospitals to benefit from international development programme

Nurses working in the Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) will benefit from a new educational programme which aims to further develop their skills and will enhance patient care.

A total of 350 places have been funded by NUH for nurses to complete the two year programme Associate level programme with the Faculty of Emergency Nursing.

The internationally recognised accredited programme will take staff through a series of knowledge and skill-based learning with clinically based competencies.

The course, which is held via webinars and online learning, is split into eight units which are: Core, Adult and Older Adult, Children and Young People, Psychological care, Pre-hospital care, Major incident, patients with non-life or non-limb threatening injuries and Major trauma.

Clare Mayfield, a Matron in the Emergency Department, at Nottingham University Hospitals Trust said: “We are extremely grateful and proud of the work of our Emergency Nurses and we have seen how their action has upheld the ethos of the nursing profession.

“Over the last few years, but particularly through the harrowing and challenging pandemic, our nursing staff have invested their good will and professional heart into our Emergency Department and our Acute Medical receiving areas and this is our opportunity to provide a real commitment to overseeing the development of our Emergency Nurses.

“We have seen them exercise compassionate determination to give quality care to our patients in such difficult circumstances.

“Looking at feedback from nurses from around Ireland, the UK and further afield who have undertaken this programme we see the positive impact and long term benefit the programme has given them, by enhancing patient care, increasing confidence and competence to undertake demanding nursing practice within emergency care settings.”

Judith Morgan, President of the Faculty of Emergency Nurses (FEN), said: “We are delighted that we have Nottingham University Hospitals Trust as a corporate member and to see that they are investing in their Emergency Nurses.

“FEN enables Emergency Nurses to achieve their individual and collective potential, realise their ambitions and through education and networking, support them to deliver quality care to patients in emergency departments locally, nationally and internationally.

“Our mission is to develop the knowledge and capabilities of emergency nurses and to improve patient care and we are looking forward to working with the staff at the hospital.”

The programme, which is for nurses working in the hospital’s Adult and Children’s Emergency Department and in Acute Medicine, will be launching on 5 November 2021 with the first cohort of nurses.
