Bus named after Nottingham nurse
A Nottingham mum who has worked at Nottingham City Hospital for over 20 years had a NCT bus named after her today, after winning a special award to celebrate the NHS’s 70th anniversary.
Deborah Spence, Deputy Team Leader in Urology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH), was the winner of the Chair’s Award at the hospitals’ staff awards, and her prize is a bus named after her.
Deborah was chosen as the winner for the exceptional work she has done to mentor and teach the Theatre stars of the future (known as student Operational Department Practitioners (ODPs)). She also works tirelessly to improve the urology service to further improve patient and staff experience at NUH.
Deborah has taken on the role of looking at the admissions for urology theatres to see how it could run smoother not only for the team but for patients too.
Deborah said: “I was not expecting to win let alone have a bus named after me. I feel well and truly blessed to not only work for such a fantastic organisation, I am privileged to be able to work closely with students helping to shape and mould them in their future careers as they progress to be part of the NHS.”
The new NCT bio-gas bus that now has Deborah’s name and face on it is one of many buses that reduce CO2 emissions by up to 84% compared to a brand new diesel double decker bus.
The Trust’s Chair, Eric Morton, selected Deborah as the winner of the special NHS 70 Award, which is kindly sponsored by Nottingham City Transport.
Eric said: “The NHS 70 Award recognises those who showcase NUH values and behaviours in everything they do, from the care that they show to our patients to their approach to challenges, and Deborah’s nomination stood out from all of the others to me.
“We are grateful to Nottingham City Transport for sponsoring the award and for naming one of their buses after our deserving winner, Deborah Spence; a partnership that puts NUH right into the heart of our local community.”
