Rosemarie Frier
‘Gives 100% in every aspect of nursing’
Rosemarie, a Deputy Sister in Ophthalmology, has an ‘aura that uplifts you whatever the issue’, according to one of her colleagues.
And the praise doesn’t stop there with many colleagues sharing similar words. Kathryn Skill describes Rosemarie as an ‘excellent nurse who always goes above and beyond the help patients, friends, families and staff.’ She said: “Rose recently helped me in an unexpected situation and she was so caring, considerate and helpful and she really did put me at ease.”
Another colleague, Rose, said: “Rosemarie is one of the most dedicated and compassionate nurses I have ever come across in my time at QMC. Nothing is ever an issue or a problem and she takes everything in her daily stride, all with a beautiful and warming smile on her face, making her patients feel at ease and cared for.”
Colleague Noha describes a recent situation which sums up Rosemarie’s professionalism. She said: “We had a patient who had an anaphylactic reaction to a dye and she managed it amazingly, and taught us all how to manage it as well. Her communications skills are excellent.”
Another nominator said “She has shown determination in her work ethic and has been an amazing support to me personally through a very traumatic period, keeping professional while dealing with sensitive matters. She is caring and overall a wonderful friend and family member.”

Rachel Newton
‘A heart of gold’
Colleague Jessica Mitchell has nothing but admiration for Rachel, a respiratory Nurse at Nottingham City Hospital’s Fleming Ward.
She said: “From the moment I met Rachel I was welcomed with open arms and we became friends instantly. She is the most selfless, caring person I have ever met in my life. She will put anyone before herself.”
This was no more evident than when Rachel played wedding planner for a poorly patient. Jessica said: “Rachel has a heart of gold, which reflects within her work. In one case, a patient could not attend her daughter’s wedding day as she was too poorly to leave the ward. Rachel made her dreams come true and brought the wedding to the ward. She decorated it and organised for a chaplain to come. Not only this, Rachel spent her own money on buying the patient and her family a cake to enjoy on their special day. There is honestly no one else more deserving than Rachel. She is humble and gives the same attitude to each and every patient.”
It’s no surprise then that Rachel makes the shortlist for Adult Nurse of the Year. Her continuous resilience and bubbly personality makes her the perfect nomination.
Jessica added: “Rachel does everything out of total love and care. She is everything a nurse should be, and Fleming Ward is tremendously proud of her and her continuous hard work in the trust. Well done Rachel Newton.”

Angela Knifton
‘An advocate for patients and families’
Angela works as a Nurse Specialist at the Nottingham Mobility Centre (NMC), which specialises in the care and rehabilitation for amputees across the region. She began her career in 2008 and does a fabulous job of supporting patients and staff, ensuring the service runs smoothly and to national guidelines.
One of Angela’s nominators said: “Angela has worked hard to create links and contacts for this service. Through educating and training other services and visiting other centres she has also enhanced our own service by learning from the experiences of others.
“Due to the nature of our services we have an on-site manufacturing workshop, so in addition to Angela’s normal duties she has over the years provided emergency medical care to some of our technical staff who’ve had serious and minor accidents, as well as regularly administering first aid for the whole centre.”
A patient commented: “I had a below the knee amputation 9 years ago. Since then I have been a patient at the Mobility Centre and Angela has been my regular nurse from day one. I have found her to be very supportive and extremely sensitive to my needs and concerns. She has always been totally professional with her kind and cheerful way”
And consultants have also commended Angela on her dedication and attitude. One consultant said: “Angela is the pillar of the multidisciplinary team at the NMC. In addition to her vital role as co-ordinator of the care pathway for amputees of Nottinghamshire and beyond, she is an excellent team player and leader who always has the respect of all professionals at NUH and other hospitals.

Rebecca Barrett
‘A fantastic ambassador for nurses’
Rebecca represents her nursing colleagues on the Nursing and Midwifery Board and has been recognised for her significant contribution to improving patient care.
Colleague Joanne Cooper, said: “Rebecca is always going above and beyond, not only in her practice but in the work she does with partner organisations such as Nottingham Trent University, to improve patient care in pre-operative surgery and as an ambassador for the nursing profession. She always supports others, has a positive contribution to make and will not only highlight gaps or development needs, but tries to provide evidence based solutions.”
At late notice Rebecca supported NUH's presentation in London for this year’s Nursing Times Workforce Awards and she shared passionately how proud she is to be a nurse working at NUH.
Another colleague said: “Rebecca joined the Nursing and Midwifery Board as one of the first Band 5 representatives. Over the last year she has helped nurses link up with each other through a WhatsApp group and has also led an important survey to consider how we better communicate to Band 5 nurses and midwives.
“She has represented workforce extremely well at our board meetings and ensures that the voice of nurses is considered as we make strategic decisions affecting our teams. Rebecca has really been a fantastic ambassador for our Band 5 nurses.”
Rebecca has recently taken up a new position within our Institute of Nursing and Midwifery Care Excellence as a Shared Governance Facilitator.
