Hayward House

City Hospital campus

Hayward House our 'hospice within the hospital' cares for patients with advancing cancer and motor neurone disease, together with care of their families. Volunteers in this area help bring an additional dimension to the holistic care, by providing an extra personal service.

The ways in which they help are many and varied, including assisting on the ward area, supporting patients attending day-care on a one to one basis, running the coffee bar, helping with diversional sessions, together with the more personal aspects of care such as manicure/hand care and hairdressing. All day care patients are brought in and taken home by a dedicated team of car drivers and additional volunteers in this area of work are especially needed.

Fundraising volunteers also play a vital part in bringing in much needed financial resources, working in such areas as charity shops, refreshment areas in local prisons, together with annual appeals.

Care is taken in trying to match personal skills, aptitudes and interests with volunteer roles. Induction and training is always given, along with continuing support.

Listening skills, care and compassion are essential attributes for volunteers in this specialised area, and are especially utilised in bereavement care.
