Supporting Young Adults with Kidney Disease

The Young Adult Renal Service started in September 2010 as part of a national 18-month project funded by NHS Kidney Care, with the aim of supporting 18-25 year olds living with kidney problems with the issues that they face in their lives. This project came about as it was acknowledged that living with a chronic illness between these ages can be especially challenging as people go through a variety of changes and look to plan for their future. This service runs in the adult renal units at Nottingham and Derby Hospitals and supports around 80 young adults in this area who are living with kidney problems.

This service offers a wide range of support including both individual and group support and activities in a wide range of areas including employment, training, benefits, exercise or simply just having someone to talk to about things. We also have good links with a variety of other agencies that may be able to support you, so if we are unable to help you we can usually refer you on to someone that can.

The initial 18-month project came to an end in March 2012, however the young adult service has continued due to a generous 3-year grant from the British Kidney Patient Association (BKPA).

More details about the support and activities we offer can be found on the 'What we do' page.

Contacting the Service

Matt works Monday to Friday across both hospital sites. The best way to contact him is on his mobile and if you can't get hold of him then just leave a message or send a text asking him to call you back. You can also access the project through your Doctor or Nurse. Just let them know that you would like to see the Young Adult Worker.
