Feto-maternal Medicine Unit (FMMU)

StaffWhat is the FMMU?

The FMMU is a referral centre for the Trent Region for women who need extra support because their pregnancy has become complicated. Some women have an underlying medical condition which puts extra stress on them during pregnancy. Referral to this unit may also be made because there is a concern about your unborn baby. The care given by the staff in the unit often involves close liaison with other specialities.

Who will I be seen by?

The unit is staffed by experienced senior midwives, sonographers (staff who are trained and skilled in performing scans) and senior doctors (Consultants and Senior Registrars). The team is supported by auxiliaries. For some women it is important to be seen by doctors from other specialities, too, such as diabetes, haematology or neonatal surgery.

How often do I attend?

Some women who need to attend the FMMU will require only one visit whereas for some other women almost all of their care during pregnancy will be offered at the unit. It is important, however, that you still see your own community midwife in between FMMU appointments – she will be able to provide support at home, and help you with other aspects of preparation for childbirth.

Where do I go?

As the FMMU is situated in the antenatal area, you check in at the reception desk and will be directed to the waiting area.  The FMMU staff will call you into the unit from there.

What will happen?

The FMMU staff will ensure that you know what is happening during your appointment. Sometimes your visit will only be for a discussion with one of the specialists, which may include a scan. It may involve having simple monitoring of your blood pressure or of your baby’s heartbeat. Some women attend for a procedure to diagnose a problem with the baby, such as an amniocentesis, and some for a procedure to treat the baby in the womb.

When is the Unit open?

The clinic sessions are held Monday – Friday, between 8.30am – 4pm.
