courses
Designed to provide a training environment, that can be used, by a variety of healthcare
teams from hospital or community-based backgrounds to showing.
The Simulation Room can be altered to mimic the workplace appropriate for the staff
involved in the training exercises. The manikin and other equipment require participants
to interact and make decisions in real-time with little or no involvement of a 'trainer'
during the scenario; to create a life like medical environment allowing realistic scenarios to be
reproduced and enacted without any risk to the patient the manikin can 'talk' to the team members if
appropriate, blink his/her eyes, breathe, and respond appropriately to a wide range of drugs and
fluids administered intravenously via a specially designed 'bar-code' reader. A dedicated telephone
line permits communication with 'laboratory staff' or 'difficult colleagues', or can be used for calls
to the 'emergency services'. All activity within the Simulator Room can be recorded via several
fixed cameras and microphones for subsequent feedback to the team.

The Control Room contains the computer equipment, which controls the human patient manikin,
and the audio-visual recording apparatus for the Simulation Room and the seminar room. During a
training exercise this room will contain an instructors and a technicians who are directing and
observing the scenario.
The Seminar Room allows other staff to observe the scenarios via one-way glass, and
subsequently is used by the instructor(s) to facilitate a debriefing exercise for the team
and observers, which can be reinforced by playing back recorded components of the scenario
if required. This powerful form of immediate feedback, along with the ability to observe
colleagues participating in scenarios, provides an unparalleled opportunity to highlight
communication, awareness, team-member and leadership skills which are otherwise difficult or
impossible to teach on an interprofessional basis in the clinical setting.
Clinical Skills
A flexible space that can be set up to deliver a
range of training from, for example, moving and handling training to advanced
surgical skills.
The area can be set up to meet identified needs
from small workshop type space to a large room for group training. The Centre
will offer courses and also a self-directed learning area whereby students can practice
in their own time with the support of a technician as required.
The Centre is developing a store of core equipment to support training, this
includes one of the new Trust beds, couches, manual handling equipment, laparoscopic
equipment for surgical skills training.
The space can be used as one large room or
subdivided into 3 smaller areas:
 |
| Clinical Skills Room 1 |
Lectern with audio visual facilities and can be linked to operating theatres at QMC |
| Clinical Skills Room 2 |
Flexible space, wash hand basins, work benches |
| Clinical Skills Room 3 |
2 bed positions with fully working medical air, oxygen and suction. |
The clinical skills rooms are designed to be flexible to meet different course needs and
will predominantly focus on specific skills or aspects of training. Designed for the multidisciplinary
team, training will include a range of skills based sessions, for example canulation, use of medical
equipment and moving and handling training. Ability to record teaching in this room via ceiling camera points.
In addition the centre offers nationally recognised courses including Resuscitation Council approved courses.
Course currently being offered/developed include:
- Basic Surgical Skills - Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh approved
- Advanced Surgical Skills - nationally recognised courses teaching advanced laparoscopic skills incorporating live links to theatres
- Advanced Airway Management Skills
- Medical Equipment Strategy - development of a strategy for QMC incorporating medical devices
training, issues of competency and assessment
- Endoscopy Users - a high fidelity endoscopy simulator is available to support existing and new
training in endoscopy and bronchoscopy as well self directed learning.
- National Life Support Courses - APLS, ALS, CCrISP, ILS
- Nottingham Regional Anaesthesia Course- A regular conference offered on a national basis.
Self Directed Learning
TSCSC offers self directed learning sessions on an endoscopy simulator and also
provide sessions using the laparoscopic trainers and equipment.
These sessions are designed to allow individuals the opportunity to practice specific skills and procedures.
Although teaching is not provided, it is expected that individuals will work through a series of exercises
identified by him/herself and a clinical supervisor tutor.
If you would like to book onto any of these sessions please download the form, fill in and reutrn:
Endoscopy Simulator Self Directed Learning Sessions
The endoscopy simulator (by Immersion Medical) uses sophisticated
computer technology to produce realistic procedures and cases. The
centre offers the following procedures:
Bronchoscopy patient simulations including:
- Introduction to bronchoscopy
- Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL)
- Endobronchial sampling
- Paediatric fibre optic laryngoscopy cases
- Transbronchial Needle Aspiration (TBNA)
Lower GI Endoscopy patient simulations including:
- Introduction to flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy
- Flexible sigmoidoscopy: supplementary cases
- Colonoscopy: biopsy and basic polypectomy
Upper GI Endoscopy patient simulation including:
- Introduction to OGD & ERCP
Modules include patient history, indications and contraindications and have 3D interactive
anatomical models and tutorials. Post simulation case review and procedural review data can
be stored on your personal user database. Includes didactic content to aid and deepen
understanding.

Laparoscopic Self Directed Learning Sessions
The Laparoscopic trainer includes a body torso simulator, cameras, light source
and instruments and can be set up to support practice in a range of surgical
techniques.
Our laparoscopy simulator provides an ideal opportunity to practice the basic laparoscopic
skills using genuine instruments, camera and telescope with an excellent monitor.
As used on accredited courses.
This laparoscopy simulator is a valuable tool for improving suturing, cutting, grasping,
manipulation, orientation and depth perception skills and managing first second and third paradox.
