Limbs and Things Demonstration of a LapSim® Laparoscopic Trainer

11am-2pm, Tuesday 29th May 2012 at Trent Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre

Limbs and Things Laparoscopic Trainer Your are invited to this drop in session for a hands on demonstration of the LapSim® Laparoscopic Trainer

The LapSim virtual reality system is a combination of computer hardware and software modules which recreate the procedures and environment of abdominal keyhole surgery, providing a safe and effective learning experience.

The LapSim system utilises advanced 3D technology, including interactive live video, to provide the trainee with a realistic virtual working environment. Practice sessions can vary in graphic complexity as well as in the level of difficulty.

Courses can easily be created or modified by the teacher to fit a trainee's specific needs, or the requirements of a training curriculum. Save, import and export functions facilitate course sharing between educators and institutions.

LapSim is the most evaluated and validated system for virtual reality-based laparoscopic training on the market (over 40 evaluations). An increasing number of papers have clearly demonstrated the beneficial effects of both short-term and long-term systematic training with LapSim. Conclusions have shown that novice surgeons trained using the LapSim system have acquired skills that transfer into the operating room.

The Basic Skills and Cholecystectomy modules have both been shown to discriminate between trainees with varying degrees of expertise and experience, thus showing that the system is well suited not only for training purposes, but also for examination and certification.

Skills
  • LapSim® Basic Skills: camera navigation, instrument navigation, co-ordination, grasping, cutting, clip applying, lifting and grasping, suturing, precision and speed, handling intestines, fine dissection.
  • LapSim® Task Training: peg transfer, pattern cutting, ligating loop. LapSim® Cholecystectomy: cystic duct and artery clipping and removal, gall bladder separation and removal from liver.
  • LapSim® Gyn: tubal occlusion, salpingectomy, tubotomy, myoma suturing.
  • LapSim® Suturing and Anastomosis: needle passing, interrupted stitching, running stitching, square knot, surgeon's knot, stitch and square knot, stitch and surgeon's knot, interrupted suturing, running suturing, side-to-side anastomosis.

UK Simulation in Nursing Education Conference Announces Keynotes

Professor Bryn Baxendale, Director of the Trent Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre (TSCSC) and President of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), will deliver a keynote address.

Andy Buttery This summer in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom, Leeds Metropolitan University in partnership with CAE Healthcare is hosting the 6th Annual UK Simulation in Nursing Education Conference, “International Simulation Standards: The Impact on Educators” on June 19 and 20, 2012. Building on the success of last year’s dynamic conference at The University of Surrey, Guildford nurses from all disciplines and other allied healthcare professionals will have the opportunity to debate, share and network simulation as an educational approach in the historic city of Leeds.

CAE Healthcare will welcome three world class academics as keynotes, Professor Bryn Baxendale, Director of the Trent Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre (TSCSC), and President of the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH) and Professor Judith Ellis MBE, Executive Dean for Health and Social Care at London South Bank University on the first day.

Opening the second day will be Dr. Jay K. Ober, National Director of Nursing Operations and Regional Dean of Nursing, Education Affiliates Inc., Maryland, USA. Other conference highlights include Master Classes centred around debriefing, planning and building a simulation centre and setting up OSCEs with a learning managing system. There will also be a product showcase focusing on the latest technology from CAE Healthcare. There are concurrent sessions with poster, oral and interactive workshop sessions using a simulation mannequin.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Lister Surgical Skills Competition 2011 - 12

Lister winners On Saturday 8th October 2011 Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre (TSCSC) on QMC campus was delighted to host the East Midlands round of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh national Lister Surgical Skills Competition 2011-12.

Mr William Tennant, Consultant Surgeon at QMC and Regional Surgical Advisor for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh convened the competition supported by RCoS Edinburgh regional leads from Leicester and examiners drawn from NUH - Mr D Adla , Mrs S Chandrasekar, Mr D Exon and Mr M Newey. Julie Prince , Melody Cotes and Giulia Miles from TSCSC supported the event on the day.

17 medical students from Nottingham and Leicester competed in a series of surgical skills exercises that included knot tying and suturing , each one 15 minutes long and assessed by the expert faculty. The standard was very good and resulted in a tie - after a tie break question, the regional winner was announced as Christopher Bayliss, medical student from Nottingham and 2nd place was awarded to Charlotte Rowley from Leicester.
