Specialist Palliative Care Services

“The palliative care approach is to focus on quality of life and good symptom control in patients whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment. It centres on holistic care of patients and relatives, whatever their disease.”

Referrals may be made for:

  • Assessment of palliative care needs
  • Emotional support for patient or family
  • Symptom management (may need to be assessed by the Palliative Care Medical Team)
  • Assessment for transfer to Hayward House or other palliative care unit
  • Referral for community Macmillan nurse
  • Day Care follow up at Hayward House or other palliative care unit
  • Medical follow up following discharge (needs assessment by palliative medicine consultant)

Specialist Palliative Care Services comprise – Hospital Palliative Care Team, Hayward House (Inpatient unit, day-care, outpatients, counselling and bereavement team, complementary therapy unit, and study and research centre) and the Community Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Service.
