Having recently moved for expansion, they now have 16 inpatient beds and a larger GP assessment area with 3 treatment rooms / assessments room.
They aim to ensure that children admitted to hospital have the shortest stay as possible and are appropriately discharged at the earliest opportunity. This is achieved by using a nurse-led discharge policy whenever possible. When children spend less time in hospital and parents have the confidence to take their child home re-admission rates are reduced.

They also see ward attenders for surgical or medical urgent reviews and to change dressings that cannot be done in the community.
Students are at present rotated through AMBCU for 1 week as part of their surgical placement.
PICU at the Nottingham University Hospitals Queens Medical Centre campus provides a regional service for the East Midlands. A large proportion of their admissions are from our Emergency Department but they also take internal and external transfers.
PICU has funding for 6 beds and the capacity for 10, accepting patients from a range of specialities including acute medicine, surgical, ENT, trauma and orthopaedics. They continue to be a lead centre for neurology and spinal care.
They have an established an education team within PICU providing support and education for the staff. Following the appointment of a research nurse there is now a drive to increase research activity, implementing MCRN studies within PICU.
The Nottingham PICU team undertakes transfer of critically ill children referred to the unit from District General Hospitals, mainly within the Trent region and further a field. The service is a mobile intensive care bed using the staff from PICU.

With 21 consulting rooms, 2 treatment rooms, plaster on and off
rooms and 2 large waiting play areas divided into 2 busy clinic
areas (East and South), the Play Staff are never short of something
to do!
Children and young people visit clinic for a host of reasons and
many need reassurance and guidance about procedures they may have to
undergo during their visit so we provide distraction and preparation
play .
As Play Specialists our aim is to make the environment feel
child-friendly, age appropriate, informative and fun. We want
visitors to leave with a positive view of their visit as this may be
their first or only experience of a hospital.
We frequently give out stickers and certificates to thank children
for their cooperation and we provide a range of art, craft and
general play activities whilst in clinic – all helping children,
young people and their parents to feel more “at home” and relaxed.
Recently we had 2 pieces of artwork installed in East clinic, with
an installation of another piece of art work in the South Block
clinic planned for the near future. We are very proud of this and
hope it will improve their experience of our hospital by generating
discussion amongst the children, young people and their parents.
