Complementary therapy (CT) treatments are available at the
Nottingham Children's Hospital, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Virginia (Ginny) McGivern, who is qualified both as a children’s
nurse and a Complementary therapist, runs the clinics, which are are
held five days a week. Each session lasts an hour.
Referrals can be made by any member of the multidisciplinary team
for all children/young people being treated at NUH, who are
experiencing a variety of acute or chronic conditions. The CT
service is increasingly being seen as part of a programme of care,
and not just a luxury for many of this group of patients.
Therapies provided include aromatherapy, massage, relaxation
techniques and Indian head, neck and shoulder massage. Also baby
massage instruction can be provided for parents.
The aim of the service is to support the child / young person and
family through their treatment, by offering them TLC, symptomatic /
pain relief and attempting to improve their quality of life.
Training, education, raising awareness and advice to parents /
carers, nurses, doctors is provided by the (CT) nurse specialist.
The Complementary Therapy Unit is funded by charitable sources –
Nottingham University Hospitals Charity and The Teenage Cancer
Trust.
