Video Pharyngography

What is VPG?

VPG is an X-ray which is used to assist in the assessment of swallowing.

Who may benefit from VPG?

People who have difficulty and need assessment of their swallow, to help the Speech and Language Therapists decide which consistencies of food and drink are safe. In addition it may be used to look at other ways to try and help the safety of swallowing.

How is this achieved?

The patient is given food or drink which contains barium (this will show up on an X-ray). An X-ray is taken whilst the patient is swallowing the food or drink which shows what happens inside the throat and mouth, and where the food / drink goes. This will provide the Speech and Language Therapist with more information about any swallowing problems.
