Treadmill Training

What is treadmill training?

Treadmill training uses a harness to support an individuals body weight whilst they are on the treadmill.

Who may benefit from treadmill training?

Patients who would otherwise be unable to stand and take their own weight safely.

How is this achieved?

  • In this reduced weight environment, the patient can relearn how to walk in a safe and controlled manner without risk of injury to themselves or the staff involved.
  • This opportunity to experience walking (facilitated by Physiotherapists) can be a crucial step in regaining mobility.
  • Once patients become stronger and more proficient, less of their weight is taken by the harness and they may progress to walking off the treadmill.
  • The benefits of treadmill training go far beyond the functional gains of mobility, they include
    • Improved circulation and cardiovascular fitness,
    • Maintenance of muscle mobility and range,
    • Motivation for patients and carers
