Spasticity Management

What is spasticity management?

Spasticity is tightness in the muscles caused by damage to the brain or spinal cord. Without effective treatment this stiffness can become severe, causing problems with every aspect of daily life such as getting washed, dressed, going to the toilet and sitting in a chair. It may also cause pain.

Spasticity management involves the use of a range of different medications & therapy treatments to reduce spasticity and maintain flexibility of the muscles.

Who may benefit from spasticity management?

Anybody who has spasticity that interferes with their daily life.

How is this achieved?

Each patient is assessed by the specialist team of doctor & physiotherapist, as well as the occupational therapist & orthotist when necessary. A treatment plan is discussed and agreed with the patient.  This may include oral medication, injection of botulinum toxin into the tight muscles, provision of stretches or exercises and splints or casts. Advice will also be given to help each individual know what to do next.
